Computer refractometry

Refractokeratometry
(This test is part of the initial diagnostic evaluation.)

Computerized refractokeratometry is a method used to measure the refraction (focusing power) of the eye and the shape of the cornea. An infrared test pattern, which the patient does not see, is projected onto the retina. How this pattern changes depends on the refraction of the patient’s eye. A special computer analyzes these changes and converts them into numbers.

Keratometry means measuring the curvature (radius) and refractive power of the cornea. This test is important for choosing the right contact lenses and for diagnosing corneal abnormalities. The results are printed on a built-in printer.

The results of computerized refractometry are usually enough for an initial assessment of changes in vision and for choosing glasses or contact lenses. In most cases, especially in adults, there is no need to dilate the pupils, because the autorefractometer has a function that relaxes accommodation (the focusing effort of the eye). However, in children with strong and active accommodation, short-term pupil dilation (up to 6 hours) is needed to obtain accurate values, which are important for treatment and follow-up.

Our clinic is equipped with modern refractokeratometers from leading global manufacturers such as CANON, TOMEY and REICHERT. For examining children, we use a special refractometer that can measure refraction from a distance of about 1 meter, even in infants.
