Gonioscopy
Gonioscopy
(This examination is part of the initial diagnostic work-up)
Gonioscopy is a contact diagnostic method in ophthalmology that allows for a precise examination of the anterior chamber of the eye. The anterior chamber is located between the iris and the cornea (the corneal coat), including the anterior chamber angle, which is crucial for establishing an accurate diagnosis of glaucoma – whether it is open-angle or angle-closure. This is of great importance for determining the further treatment strategy.
The examination is performed using a slit lamp and a gonioscope. The slit lamp is a special magnifying device with an integrated light source. The gonioscope is a system of mirrors arranged in such a way as to allow visualization of areas that cannot be seen during a routine visual examination of the eye, namely the anterior chamber angle. Before the procedure, anesthetic eye drops are instilled.
