Academician S.N. Fedorov
Svyatoslav Nikolaevich Fedorov was born in. Proskurovo in Ukraine in 1927, has graduated medical faculty of medical institute in Rostov-na-Donu and started to work as the ophthalmologist in village Veshenskaya of the Rostov region, then in Lisiva of the Perm region. In 1957 he has graduated clinical internship in medical institute Rostov-na-Donu and in the same place has protected the Ph.D. thesis. In 1958 he started to work as head of clinical branch of branch of scientific research institute of eye illnesses name Helmholtz in Cheboksary.In 1958, working in Cheboksary, he has started to solve the most complicated in medical and social aspects of a problem - replacement of the grown turbid crystalline lens with artificial. After many-sided experimental researches Svyatoslav Nikolaevich has carried out first in the USSR successful implantation of intraocular lens, having opened thus a new direction in a science. The next decades have proved perspectivity of the scientific direction, he has chosen. Only in Russia S.N. Fedorov and his approaches have carried out about 1,5 million such operations. In 1961. S.N. Fedorov has headed faculty of eye illnesses of the Moscow medical stomatologic institute and problem laboratory on implantation of an artificial crystalline lens. Now it’s difficult to present to itself the conditions in ophthalmology of that time. Ophthalmologists of the different countries after unsuccessful attempts to apply an artificial crystalline lens have started to refuse this practice. Congresses of eye surgeons, printed editions dazzled with statements with cruel criticism of the idea about possible application of an artificial crystalline lens in surgical practice. Nevertheless S.N. Fedorov went against flow and has developed such technics of operation, such models of artificial crystalline lenses which have not left also a stone on a stone from criticism of opponents. At that time Feodors was the unique surgeon in the world which has given the report at small conference in Europe on the experience of application of 200 artificial crystalline lenses. Right after it he became the chief-surgeon of the International implantolog’s club and was up to the end of the days. Then the message has revolutionised surgery of a cataract. Now in the world are implanted 2 million artificial crystalline lenses into one year. If not persistence Svyatoslav Nikolaevich, a today's science would be at a level of 75-th year. Fedorov hasn’t only found the way of operation and model of artificial crystalline lenses, but also organized manufacture of the last in Moscow. It is known, that in years of stagnation it costed huge efforts. Only due to this titanic work, thousands of Soviet citizens had an opportunity to be treated according to the advanced technologies which the Western world has not had time to take yet on arms. Svjatoslav Feodor's all his life gives solves problems connected with treatment of a cataract. His ingenious inventions in the field of the surgery, the new materials, new artificial crystalline lenses till now excite all the world. From the middle 70-th gathers around Ôåäîðîâà the group of adherents. Begins work and on all directions of surgery: short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism, glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment and many other things. Forces of this collective for a short time interval develop and introduce huge amount of techniques of treatment and operations which were not applied anywhere in the world. During this period, this collective has introduced into wide clinical practice operation at short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism and their various combinations. The laboratory on implantation of an artificial crystalline lens has been transformed into independent laboratory of experimental and clinical surgery of an eye, and then in scientific research institute of Eye Microsurgery. This time S.N. Fedorov's was one of the first, who beginnings to introduce operations by means of lasers in which then nobody trusted. In his clinic has appeared the department of laser surgery first in the country which arsenal replenished and replenishes every year with new laser installations and the most up-to-date operations. In 1980 on the basis of scientific research institute of eye microsurgery was created IRTC «Eye Microsurgery» with branches in 11 large industrial cities of Russia, and S.N. Fedorov has become the general director. In 1984 was created eximer-laser which is successfully applied at 25000 operations. The technology refractive operations, developed by S.N.Fedorovym and received distribution in many countries of the world, has allowed more than to 12 million people to get rid of glasses, to find pleasure of work, happiness of dialogue with the nature and engagement in sport. Svjatoslav Nikolaevich Feodors has given with a pulse at once to several basic directions without which the modern ophthalmology is inconceivable. His fundamental works in area of implantology, keratoprosthesing, glaucoma, atrophies of an optic nerve, vitreoretinalis and laser surgery became the classics of world ophthalmology. S.N.Fedorov has made original revolution in ophthalmology. From a modest measured science he has transformed it into bright, roughly progressing, prestigious branch of medicine. Thanking his achievements Russia even now, remains to be one of leaders of world ophthalmology. Realizing his principle "Fine eyes - to everyone!", Svjatoslav Feodors and his school, associates in different countries have made happy millions blind people. In 1994 on the International congress of ophthalmologists in Canada S.N.Fedorov by right has been awarded with the maximum professional honour: he was recognized IRTC «Eye Microsurgery» under permanent conduct of Svjatoslav Nikolaevich became not only one of the world best medical centers, but also the world famous scientific school which has graduated hundreds of highly skilled experts who have headed ophthalmologic establishments of Russia and many countries. S.N. Fedorova's scientific activity never was end in itself, did not contain abstract researches. Each step has been caused by organic need to render the most effective aid to the patient, as soon as possible to return him qualitative sight. Therefore it is no wonder, that a result of huge number of scientific researches became development of the invention. Svjatoslav Nikolaevich is the author of 523 scientific works, 7 monographies, 234 inventions, 108 patents. Under his manual 86 candidate theses and 25 doctoral theses are executed and successfully protected. S.N.Fedorov was chairman of Board of the All-Russia scientific organization of ophthalmologists, the editor-in-chief of magazine "Ophthalmosurgery", the member of editorial boards of magazines "Bulletin of ophthalmology" (USA), "American society of implantologs", "Refraction's surgery" (USA), "News of eye surgery" (USA), "the European magazine of implantation and refractive surgery», the president of the International ceratorefractologist society, the honorary member of the International society of implantation of an artificial crystalline lens, a member of the International society on phacoemulsification and cataract surgery, the honorary member of the International society on corneoplastic microsurgery, a member of the European society of cataract and refractive surgery. For the big merits in the field of national public health services S.N. Fedorov was awarded with «Sign of Honour», Lenin's order, October Revolution order, "Labour Red banner" and a rank of "Hero of Socialist Work". For scientific researches in ophthalmosurgery area S.N. Fedorov has been awarded with the supreme award of the Academy of sciences - the Gold medal of Lomonosov - and premiums by M.I. Averbah of Academy of medical sciences. He was also the winner of the State premium of the Russian Federation in the field of a science and technics, and also the winner Paleolog premiums (USA), Periclus premiums (Italy). But he was not the simple scientist, the brilliant surgeon, the talented organizer, the creator, the devotee. He was the outstanding personality, whose glory has stepped over national borders. Svjatoslav Feodor has introduced in medical practice the advanced methods of the organization of work and has constructed ophthalmologic service in the country on the principles which have proved the viability and perspectivity during the most difficult crisis times: He is the founder of world unique Complex of eye microsurgery, has suggested and realized original and unique organizational innovations: a brigade method of work, a lease contract, mobile operational with a diagnostic complex of the equipment on the basis of buses, the steam-ship, the railway car; diagnostic and surgical conveyors with wide use of modern computer technics. On June, 2, 2000 Svjatoslav Nikolaevich Fedorov tragically was lost. Russia has lost the great son who was given out all forces, talent, energy for development of a domestic science and rise of public health services, the innovator on spirit and a way of life, the active humanist on belief. The great scientist to which name during many decades development of priority directions of domestic and world ophthalmology has been connected has left. All, that he’s made for medicine, for a society as a whole and for each of us is impossible to overestimate. The concept of progress of medicine has been connected to name Svjatoslav Nikolaevich Fedorov during many decades.Svjatoslav Fedorov treated people how anybody another is not skilful. Millions of patients who was returned sight and was presented pleasure of a high-grade, bright life in his clinics have, proved it more convincingly then any awards and official ranks. He was the Person multivariate many-sided. Fanatical fidelity to the business, irrepressible energy is the "Fedorov’s style". He had such energy that involved all associates in abrupt whirlpool of ideas and plans. Bright strain of Svjatoslav Nikolaevich was ability to awake in people only strong emotions, all feelings, except for indifference. He was skilful to keep his word and to bear the responsibility, was skilful to be pleased of life, even when it allowed to that few occasions. His distinctive features were almost reckless boldness (human, professional, civil) and skill to remain always the lookout. He was the person of open heart and lavish soul, he loved life and aspired to make each its second high-grade creative. The loss which has overtaken us is irreplaceable. Talent is a continuity of efforts. Fedorov was from this type of people the and here was the secret of his phenomenal rise from the provincial doctor up to the world famous scientist. When the person of such scale leaves, all of us, without exception, feel like deserted. He lays on a country churchyard in Slavino, on the land which remembers him. To his tomb come and come people - not with idle curiosity, and on a call of heart. Doctors of "Fedorov’s schools" still return to people sight in operational on all country. It means, that he could go through death, as go through illnesses, and to win, as win the enemy. To develop and continue Business to which served Svjatoslav Fedorov, became henceforth our direct and sacred duty. Each of us keep in the heart carefully light memory about Svjatoslav Nikolaevich Fedorov.
The government of the Russian Federation has made the decision on assignment to the Intersectoral Research and Technology Complex "Eye Microsurgery" Ministries of Health of the Russian Federation the a name of academician S.N. Fedorov.  top
